He carried a sword and torch and was described as a nerd when it came to medicine.
Klein arrived at Torrentmoot with The Party during the flood truce and helped finish splitting Grothlin’s remaining logs. Grothlin thanked him, flirted with him, and asked his name. Klein joined Bonesnap’s hunting expedition. On the second day, he helped the sickened hunters with supplies he had packed. That night, when two burrowing creatures erupted from the ground, he rushed one, struck it, and unleashed a burst of blood magic around himself. The creature later lunged at him and missed. On the third day, near the aurochs herd, Klein fought across rocky ground and struck an aurochs. After another charged him toward the cliff, he unleashed another burst of magic and decapitated one of the beasts.
Klein traveled with The Group and remained beside the fire, eating meat before joining the search for Kar, Xan, and Ilo. In the ravine, he found child-sized tracks leading beneath the rubble and took part in clearing the blocked passage. In the darkness beyond, he lit his torch and guided Fizzik, struck a skeleton with his sword, found little flesh for the blade to cut, and withdrew. He later struck a skeletal champion with vitality energy and then his sword. Against the white-haired undead, he repeatedly attempted to strike it but missed. Afterward, he treated himself, discovered a concealed handle, and opened a hidden door into a former treasure room.
Klein asked Kestrel about a mutual-aid alliance between the Knights and the Black Jackets. He offered to bring the proposal to the captains but could not guarantee their agreement, and suggested a gift might help secure the alliance. Kestrel gave him a silver scimitar recovered from a former squire of hers; he accepted it and promised to convey the Knights of Lastwall’s goodwill to the Black Jackets’ captains. That night, he struck one of the undead bears with freezing magic, hit another with his sword, and aided Vaska. He later split the remaining bear in half with his sword. During the insult contest, Klein mocked The Boy for having been locked in a dungeon; The Boy answered that he had rescued Klein there. Klein won exchanges over The Boy’s lateness to fights, his appearance, and his threat to crush him. The Boy walked away, and Klein said they had a feud. On the way to the overlook, Klein crossed the needledown cactus but failed to climb clear of the aurochs before rain began. When undead attacked the stragglers, he engaged one and was bitten and wounded by another, then burned a creature with his breath. It grabbed him and whispered to him; Klein resisted, and its next bite missed.
At the start of the Deluge, Klein breathed fire over two ghouls, then cut another in the face with his sword. Waterlogged ground slowed his advance. During the fight with the wizard, a blast of water and flotsam hurt him. He struck the wizard with his sword and received healing from Gurnak. After the wizard clawed him, Klein attacked with his sword three times, later used cold magic, and swung at the wizard again. Gurnak’s next attack destroyed the wizard. At Torrentmoot, Klein made two attempts to load equipment for the evacuation. At the ravine, he made magical attacks against both skin slugs and hit them. One covered his face and mouth with skin and grabbed him. After Vanna detonated a rune, Klein was no longer held. He moved toward a slug and struck it twice, then used cold magic and hit it with his weapon. Gurnak froze the slug to death, revealing an underwater battle axe. Klein asked whether anyone objected to him taking it. After Gurnak examined Solara’s wounds, Klein asked whether anyone needed more healing before the party returned to the caravan.
