Character overview
Katrine Vinder is the elder of Ven and Solsta's two daughters, a young woman whose primary distinction in Sandpoint's social landscape is a romantic entanglement with Banny Harker that her father regards with an intensity of disapproval that has done absolutely nothing to discourage it and may in fact have had the opposite effect. She is spirited and headstrong in the way of young people who have grown up under close supervision and have developed a finely calibrated sense of exactly how much latitude they can take before the consequences become genuinely inconvenient, and she exercises that latitude with a determination that Sandpoint finds either admirable or alarming depending on which side of the counter they are standing on. She is fond of her family in the genuine way that people are who are simultaneously entirely done with being managed by them. She has a sister, Shayliss.
Most recently, Katrine was seen entering the lumber mill with Banny Harker two days before her body was found there. She had apparently been thrown against the operating saw and nearly split in two.
