Facts:

• The building is owned by the Scarnettis, and local farmers supply all the flower and grain produced there.
• Banny Harker is the foreman; he skims money and overcharges people who need the mill. Constantly worried and sneezing, Courrin Whesterwill manages it.
• Marked logs sometimes arrive downriver with hollow interiors containing hidden goods, which Jubrayl Vhiski’s people collect. The sawmill’s owner knows about the arrangement and would be furious if it were exposed.
• Mysterious fires claimed the Soggy River Scarnetti Mill, the Biston Pond Scarnetti Mill, and most recently the Cougar Creek Scarnetti Mill, leaving Scarnetti’s the only functioning grain mill in the region. Amid accusations of Scarnetti-sponsored arson, Courrin lowered prices for mill use to record lows until the outlying mills could be rebuilt.
• Esquik and Rasvantin Torvashti followed Banny Harker and Katrin to the mill, where its mechanical saw operated loudly. The next morning, Belor Hemlock reported a murder there.
• When the mill was found closed and its mechanical saw silent, a pale-faced guard watched the main door. Inside lay a woman’s body, nearly split in two from being thrown against the operating saw; a hand axe was near the log splitter, and the mill smelled strongly of rot.
• In a smaller office, Harker’s mutilated body hung from machinery hooks, with a seven-pointed star carved into his chest. A ledger indicated money had been skimmed from the mill.
• Eibor Thorne said Harker had involved him in skimming and arranging for marked logs to be collected instead of returned to the river. Hemlock was informed of the skimming and later reinstated the group as deputies after speaking with the The Scarnettis.
