About Nirmathas

Location overview

Nirmathas values personal freedom above almost everything else — perhaps even above life itself. It is a frontier nation born out of rebellion, carved from the wilderness by people who decided they had been governed long enough and refused to be governed again. The land has changed hands many times over the centuries, home at various points to dwarves, elves, fey, orcs, and humans, all of whom left traces behind in the form of ancient ruins, strange magical scars, and long-forgotten dungeons buried beneath the soil. The modern Nirmathi are mostly descended from Chelish and Taldan settlers, but they have thoroughly shed any loyalty to those origins. What they kept was the land itself — and they intend to hold it.
Calling Nirmathas a nation is generous. It has a capital, a nominal head of state, and a name, but no taxes, no standing army, no codified laws, and no real central authority. The forest marshal — currently a ranger named Weslen Gavirk — coordinates the war effort against Molthune, but his power extends only as far as people choose to listen to him, which is not far. Every homestead, hamlet, and settlement governs itself according to whatever its people decide works for them. Laws vary so wildly from one community to the next that you genuinely cannot know the penalty for any given crime until you are standing in front of whoever handles such things locally. Most Nirmathi consider this perfectly reasonable. They believe people know best how to run their own lives, and they are deeply suspicious of anyone who thinks otherwise.

What makes this work — barely — is that the Nirmathi are genuinely capable. Most know how to build shelter, trap food, treat wounds, and survive in the wilderness for weeks without help. They are self-reliant to the point of pride, sometimes to the point of stubbornness, and they extend that same expectation to their neighbors. Asking for help is a last resort. When Molthuni soldiers raid a village, the people do not try to fight from behind walls — they melt into the Fangwood, wait out the winter, and come back. Tamran has been burned to the ground and rebuilt within a year. The Nirmathi treat this as proof of something rather than as a tragedy.

Their faith reflects their values. Erastil — god of hunters, small communities, and self-reliance — is the most widely honored deity in the nation. Cayden Cailean, the god of freedom and heroism, runs a close second among those who think of themselves as fighters for a cause. The Green Faith is woven into daily life throughout the Fangwood; trappers and lumberjacks pay their respects to the land before they begin their work, and druids are more common here than almost anywhere else in the region.

Nirmathas is a polity whose people identify as Nirmathans and which, according to party speech, has tight borders. Ironfang Hobgoblins have invaded Nirmathas, destroying villages, killing and enslaving people, and forcing others out. The Nirmathi have faced these threats with resilience, as demonstrated when a party of Nirmathans investigated refugees at a burned clearing in Nirmathas, sharing their experiences with the wood giant Herge and expressing their belief that they had yet to meet any hobgoblins in Nirmathas who were good people. A recovered map of Nirmathas marked hobgoblin attacks and troop movements in the Fangwood, but appeared outdated, still showing hobgoblins controlling the other two forts. A Nirmathan militia representative reported attacks across Nirmathas and increasingly aggressive hobgoblin activity in the Hollow Hills. He said the Fangwood attacks had diverted the rangers and militia while the Legion secured the Nesmian Plains and advanced north of the Marideth River. Nirmathas was still recovering from its losses and needed intelligence, allies, and resources. Refugees continued arriving, and the representative warned that they might soon exceed the available food and shelter. He requested an investigation into the western situation and offered six golden-leaf brooches in recognition of service to Nirmathas. Nirmathas is not a perfect place. Its freedom is real, but so are its vulnerabilities — and right now, something is coming that will test both to their limits.
