Character overview
A man in his mid to late forties with dark, slicked-back hair that falls to the nape of his neck — well-groomed but with a practical edge to it, not vanity. His eyes are a warm amber-brown, sharp and observant, the kind that miss very little. His jaw carries a short, close-cropped beard, neatly kept. The most defining feature of his face is the scar — a clean diagonal slash that cuts from above his left eyebrow down across the bridge of his nose and onto his cheek. An old wound, well-healed, but impossible to miss. Whatever gave him that scar came very close to taking his eye. Vendel Coldblade is a resilient combatant who wields a sword that shines with holy power, a shield repaired by Gundugar Herdtender, and carries a holy symbol of Iomedae. He actively participates in a group of adventurers dedicated to protecting townsfolk and combating threats. Vendel Coldblade has engaged in multiple confrontations, including a notable encounter at the Taproot Inn, where he advanced into battle and was struck by a Fahrak but continued to fight alongside his companions. He has contributed to clearing out looters and defending the injured, demonstrating his commitment to the safety of the townsfolk.
Vendel Coldblade has also become recognized as a magical healer and supporter of allies. He possesses a commanding presence, often seen with a focused demeanor. His attire reflects his role as a healer, adorned with symbols of protection and empowerment. Vendel Coldblade is associated with a group dedicated to rescuing townsfolk from Fahrak Scout chaos in Phaendar. He empowered Wren's bow during a critical moment at Fender's Bridge, enhancing her combat effectiveness. After a battle against Ibzairiak Legion, he healed Bruneg's wounds. He remained with Main Camp's adepts, supporting and organizing refugees, and later participated in gathering resources and salvaging items for the survivors. Vendel is also a practical and resourceful individual, possessing a keen eye for identifying edible plants and berries, demonstrating knowledge of their properties. After the search for a missing father, Vendel recognized a game trail leading to dense brambles filled with large ripe red berries. He identified the berries as edible and sweet. While The Party gathered the berries, they were attacked by Bramble Lashes, which they fought and defeated. Following the battle, Vendel helped harvest the berries and returned to Camp with a substantial amount of provisions.
Vendel leads a Camp team known as "Vendel's team" and fights alongside The Party. During the attack on Kellogg's cabin, he worked to keep Bruneg standing. After Finnetharyn Fimbleshanks revived Bruneg, Vendel killed the leopard Pilla, ending the outside threat. At Gristledown, Vendel placed a 30-foot emanation and unleashed a wave of positive magic that scorched four Bloody Skeletons and later blasted the final bloody skeleton apart. He examined two sick workers with Gundugar Herdtender, identified fever, vomiting, and dehydration as an infection of unknown source, isolated the two in a separate shelter, and kept spirits up in Camp during the rain and aftermath. Vendel gathered firewood at Camp, struck a Hobgoblin with magic in a patrol fight, and has been celebrated in refugee tales, where he is presented as the terror of Mitflits. He is also a skilled conjurer known for his floating magical weapon, which he conjured during a battle with reptiles and xulgaths. Vendel provided healing to Finnetharyn Fimbleshanks after a hidden spear trap and ambush, treating The Party's wounds multiple times and targeting multiple allies at once. He struck the xulgath, shifting his guidance to another ally during the leader's defeat.
Vendel experienced a vision-like warning of impending pain or tragedy beyond a hidden Small Underground Chamber, stating to the others, "something terrible is in there." He mentioned he could take actions that "involve [his] mind," referring to "whispers of weakness." Vendel was swallowed whole by a nearly invisible Gelatinous Cube, becoming trapped and paralyzed inside, unable to move or breathe. While trapped, he probed the cube with his mind and discovered it had no special weakness but very poor reflexes. He remained paralyzed until the cube was destroyed. After it dissolved, he saw a nearly destroyed skeleton in a breastplate bearing a holy symbol of Iomedae and concluded that the figure may have been a champion of Iomedae who had been consumed. Vendel took possession of items marked with Iomedae found beneath the xulgath Caverns, believing they had been left for him. He left a breastplate behind due to carrying limits. Vendel meditated on the Iomedaean items, arranged a proper burial for a fallen Iomedaean champion, and later remained in a trance communing with his goddess. He advanced during the smithy ambush and cast a runic enhancement on Bruneg’s morningstar. He identified the attackers as undead and warned that force magic was effective against them. He later magically enhanced his own hatchet and defeated the final skeleton despite its resistance to slashing.
Vendel is a Camp team member known for gathering green wood and wet branches for Fangwood Six's Camp stores. During a cave fight, he used magic to support The Party and healed Bruneg, enabling him to return to the fight. After an encounter with a boar, Vendel identified a Magical Ring as a magical item that granted extra vitality. In a skirmish with York, he knocked the centaur to the ground and attempted additional magic that failed to stop him. Vendel spoke with expertise when asked about who should attempt the boar's ring removal. He is a named member of The Party, possessing a determined bearing and is skilled in both offensive and healing magic. After the scout alarm, Vendel laid battle magic onto Bruneg’s gear at the Stair-Top Choke Point. He poured healing magic into Bruneg, restoring wounds taken in the stair crush. Vendel also healed Finnetharyn Fimbleshanks and revived Arsène with healing magic. He attempted an opening attack that failed to connect and used a spiritual weapon that killed one of Camp's beasts.
Vendel traveled with The Party and slept through the night while the others took watch. During the first fight at Fort Ristin, his magic struck a debilitated korred heavily. In the courtyard battle, he helped bring down another battered korred. Vendel travelled with Fangwood Six as they cleared the fort. A trollhound turned from Bruneg toward Vendel and snapped at him, and one of the animated taxidermy bears seized him in the forge room. In the throne room, Vendel poured heavy healing into Bruneg and rattled Halk with a threat. Halk’s oppressive magic later slowed Vendel for one round. Vendel answered with killing magic that froze Halk’s left side solid and shattered it into ice, dropping the korred warlord. Vendel Coldblade fought alongside The Party in the fort’s lower Main Hall. During the construct battle, a wasp swarm surged over him and Gundugar Herdtender, stinging them with venomous bites. Vendel helped bring the construct down, ending the immediate threat. In the upper room, Vendel healed Bruneg after the axe-wielding Fey left him near collapse. The creature’s reactive swing missed Vendel, allowing the healing to reach Bruneg. Later, after the fey had been weakened and left helpless by The Party’s attacks, Vendel ended the fight by cutting its throat.
Vendel traveled with the party carrying a weapon and shield. He needed to rest before undertaking the larger dungeon. While searching the fort, Vendel tasted the pink paint with Finnetharyn; it tasted unpleasant, and neither identified it at first. He identified a wand of reaching and let Finnetharyn take it. During the fight with the first wooden guardian, Vendel healed Arsène. He later advanced on a second guardian and treated Arsène’s injuries again. When Bruneg could not open the heavier southern sarcophagus, Vendel opened it himself. In the armory, Vendel took the green dragonhide scale armor and identified a charm of acid resistance during the beetle attack, where he struck a frightened beetle powerfully and readied his shield.
