Character overview

A broad, heavy-set man of middle age, Bruneg possesses a build that comes not from vanity but from decades of hard physical work. What little is visible of his face beneath the deep grey hood tells a story efficiently — dark eyes set beneath a heavy brow, a strong nose, and a full dark beard, thick and well-kept, the one concession to personal grooming on an otherwise entirely utilitarian appearance. His eyes carry a quiet, steady quality. Not brooding, not aggressive — just still. The look of a man who has long since stopped being surprised by anything the world throws at him and has made his peace with that. Bruneg is a robust character equipped with a sword and shield, focused on melee combat. He has a strong physical presence and approaches challenges directly and forcefully. During the Phaendar market festival, Bruneg participated in a cart-and-shield game, overpowering two attendants to complete the challenge. He pushed through obstacles, earning laughter and admiration from onlookers. At the Taproot Inn, Bruneg drew his sword and shield to engage in melee combat against Ibzairiak Legion. He fought despite being temporarily immobilized by glue, inflicting significant damage on an enemy. After freeing himself, he raised his shield for defense, demonstrating tactical awareness in combat. Bruneg is committed to protecting his allies and engaging directly with threats.
More recently, Bruneg has been recognized as an engineer with expertise in crane operation and bridge mechanics. He leads a watch group among refugees and is known for his crafting skills. Bruneg examined the neglected repair crane at Fender's Bridge and determined it could not reach the Ironfang Legion but could collapse the bridge by smashing its wooden repair frame. He collaborated with The Party to position the crane effectively, applying his engineering knowledge to ensure the bridge's destruction. During a battle with Ironfang Hobgoblins, he engaged in melee combat with a Fahrak captain, delivering heavy blows that severely injured the officer before killing him. After the fight, he assisted in gathering weapons and alchemical items from the fallen enemies. Bruneg organized Main Camp for the survivors, taking on a leadership role in the watch group alongside Aubrin and other aristocrats, and participated in discussions about salvaging supplies and crafting, emphasizing the importance of gathering resources to support Camp.

In further developments, Bruneg suggested killing a Zulgat to scatter its patrol and moved into position with the others. During a Cave fight, he rushed in with his shield raised and declared his intent to stride forward, continue his stride, and "hit him with a good noise and raise my shield." He demonstrated knowledge of game mechanics through dialogue, inquiring if grabbing a cloak was a manipulate action, mentioning a "trap," and noting that a target was "getting double-sliped." Bruneg advanced toward Kellogg's cabin with his shield raised. He triggered an ankle-height string trap that fired an arrow into him and was struck at range by Kellogg. He pushed farther in and sustained damage, dropping to a knee badly wounded. He was repeatedly healed by Finnetharyn Fimbleshanks and Vendel Coldblade. During the cabin fight, Bruneg hacked at Kellogg and rose to finish hacking him apart. Kellogg's final retaliatory strike hit Bruneg as Kellogg fell. Back at Camp, Auburn helped Bruneg toward his tent to rest. Bruneg's team kept watch through the following days and nights, and he continued holding watch after the rain. During the Gristledown encounter, Bruneg advanced with his shield raised and smashed one bloody skeleton apart, later shattering a second bloody skeleton.

Bruneg, a skilled warrior, speaks Abla and Goblin fluently enough to understand Fahrak Scout shouts. He wields a scimitar and temporarily a Crushing Morningstar while using a Potency Crystal to enhance his weapon. During a pool ambush, he cut Gundugar Herdtender’s filament and hauled him back ashore. He engaged a chrysmal, where his scimitar skidded while shield strikes cracked it, ultimately smashing the chrysmal into fragments. He split the last dark mantle apart. In the xulgaths Small Underground Chamber, he met the warrior head-on, carved into him, held the line, was briefly blinded, activated a Potency Crystal to strike the leader, missed an opportunity to stop the boss’s casting, suffered a draining touch that weakened him, and received patching from Arsène. In the burial Unused Empty Sarcophagus, he took the Crushing Morningstar. Facing a Gelatinous Cube, he drew it toward himself, landed a crushing critical that destabilized it, was paralyzed by its slime, and later recovered as the cube fell.

Bruneg moved between trees for cover during the hobgoblin patrol engagement, was struck by Ironfang Hobgoblins' initial volleys, charged the nearest scout to tie up the enemy line, double-sliced an enemy and raised his shield, smashed a hobgoblin's head to kill the last scout, and participated in postfight healing and looting. Later, Bruneg entered a glen, noticed that a wounded man's movements were wrong and warned Fangwood Six that an illusion was likely, rushed to Gundugar Herdtender's side to patch him after the corpse burst, attempted thrown weapons then switched to his crossbow and landed a crossbow shot against the corrupted pixie. He travels with the party carrying a shield and morningstar. He forced his way up the fort’s jammed stairwell, shoved a redcap back with his shield, and later smashed it into red mist. Against the older Redcap, he rushed in, was tripped, and turned aside a kick with his raised shield before rising and hammering her while Nova pressed the attack. A trollhound bit him repeatedly; Bruneg stood, patched himself up, and returned to the fight. In the training room, Bruneg charged a stuffed bear and braced behind his shield until it seized and mauled him, eventually losing its hold. He rushed the workshop korred, whose living hair tangled him and left him clumsy. In Halk’s Throne Room, Bruneg charged the korred warlord, killed One Spriggan, endured Halk’s brutal blows, and kept pushing him. He then finished the remaining spriggan after it failed to frighten him.

Bruneg is a skilled combatant armed with a crossbow and shield. He actively participated in battles, firing his crossbow at Canopy Trolls and assisting in defeating the remaining trolls. During a confrontation with giant porcupines, he engaged them in close melee and sustained injuries from their defensive quills. While searching an abandoned campsite, Bruneg discovered a large broken tusk covered in thick green-black hair, which Wren identified as belonging to a troll. He traveled with the party toward Fort Nunder, carrying a shield and two weapons. At the overturned cart, the cave bear charged, bit, and seized him; he counterattacked with both weapons and raised his shield while holding the line. At Fort Nunder, he and Gundugar understood the Jotun argument within the ruins. When Bruneg stepped into view, the trolls shouted about eating him and betting over his legs. During the trollhound attack, Bruneg held the front while the creatures swarmed him, biting and trying to drag him down. As ordinary trolls attacked at the broken gateway, they grabbed Arsène, battered Bruneg, and reached around the rubble with their long arms; Bruneg answered with heavy swordwork. When Wren called for parley, Bruneg lowered his weapons, and the fighting ended. Afterward, he searched the welcoming statue with Finnetharyn and found a secret compartment containing silver arrows and a disguise kit.

Bruneg traveled with the party through the captured fort and surrounding wilderness. He carried a light crystal, a remote-handling tool, a hatchet, and a morningstar. He searched the fort, noticed a magical paint pot, and advised against tasting it. He later illuminated the hidden passage, helped bring a table through the swinging-axe trap, and used his remote-handling tool to remove an iron key safely. Bruneg struck and helped destroy the first wooden guardian, then attacked and helped destroy the second. He retrieved the bronze key, searched the burial Unused Empty Sarcophagus, opened the northern sarcophagus, and left its ordinary grave goods untouched. He failed to lift the southern lid until Vendel opened it, then closed both sarcophagi. In the armory, Bruneg claimed the charm of acid resistance. At the beetle Fissure, Finnetharyn concealed Bruneg with Blur. Bruneg positioned himself against a wall to draw the beetles’ attention, was injured when one trampled him, and struck one while Arsène distracted it. After the beetles were destroyed, Bruneg helped examine the corpses and returned with the party to Xulgath Caverns.
