Biography
He runs his tannery at the edge of town in the way that tanneries are always run at the edge of town, for reasons that anyone who has spent time near one fully understands, and he has developed over the years the particular self-sufficiency of a man whose neighbours are grateful for his existence in the abstract and prefer to express that gratitude from a comfortable distance. He is not unpleasant so much as thoroughly unsentimental, a quality that his work both requires and reinforces, and he regards the social niceties of Sandpoint life with the mild and unbothered detachment of someone who has never found them entirely convincing.
