Character overview

Ameiko Kaijitsu is the most immediately likeable member of a family not renowned for that quality, a young woman of remarkable talent and equally remarkable stubbornness who gave up what should have been a life of comfortable Kaijitsu prosperity to pursue first a career as an adventurer and then, when that proved sufficiently dangerous to satisfy whatever she was looking for, the proprietorship of Sandpoint's Rusty Dragon. She is warm, sharp-tongued in the affectionate rather than the wounding sense, and possessed of a musical talent that regularly fills her common room with people who came for the ale and stayed for the performance. Ameiko is a musician who plays a samisen, and her musical talent enhances the atmosphere of the Rusty Dragon. She runs the Rusty Dragon with the easy authority of someone who chose her life deliberately and has no interest in being talked out of it, which puts her in permanent quiet opposition to her father Lonjiku's view of what a Kaijitsu should be doing with themselves.
Ameiko is the daughter of Lonjiku Kaijitsu and has an older half-elf brother named Shuto. She left home at fifteen to adventure, returned briefly for her mother's funeral, and bought the Rusty Dragon two years ago. Her relationship with her family is complicated in the layered way that family relationships are when the complications have been accumulating for years without ever being fully addressed. She loves Sandpoint in the genuine and uncomplicated way that her father never quite managed, and Sandpoint returns that feeling with the loyalty of a community that recognizes one of its own.

As the innkeeper and owner of the Rusty Dragon, Ameiko greeted The Party, invited them as her guests, and prepared bedrooms upstairs for them. She served food and drink, including ale, festival leftovers, curry-spiced salmon platters, fine cheese, special wine for Ruby, fried eggs, bacon, chorizo, and Qadiran coffee. She prepared salmon soup and ale for patrons, leaving a bowl of soup and a jug of ale for each. Ameiko locked the Rusty Dragon’s front doors and stated breakfast would be ready in the morning. She knew Cerith Ferror and Ruby but not Eliza; she asked Eliza about her origins and reacted to Eliza’s exposed storm-shaped scars with surprise, muttering “goddamned Nidalese.” She was the first to arrive at Billy Barwin’s room after his screaming, demanding to know what was happening, scolding him for drinking, and ordering him to open the window; she stated she would be sleeping at the end of the corridor if needed. That night, she prepared coffee and hot water, greeted the returning party, and butchered a boar to cook for The Party and serve to customers. She identified an elven ranger named Shalelu and instructed the group to wait while the ranger sought Sheriff Hemlock.

Ameiko's establishment is a central gathering place for the community, providing immediate shelter and meals. She has a familial connection to Tsuto which may impact future events, and the discovery of a note from Tsuto raises questions about her past. Recently, she was discovered missing when morning coffee was not prepared, having left after receiving a letter from her half-brother Tsuto, asking her to meet him at the Kaijitsu Glassworks regarding their father and a recent goblin attack. The Party found Lonjiku dead at Sandpoint Glassworks. Ameiko was later found bound and gagged but alive; Cerith removed her gag and began untying her. She stated that Tsuto had approached her unarmed, lured her downstairs to talk, tried to persuade her to leave because the town was going to burn, and knocked her out when she refused. After seeing a nearby goblin corpse, Ameiko realized Tsuto had brought Goblin Tribes into town and expressed the need to go home and process what had happened.

Currently, Ameiko is a member of the Town Council, managing the Rusty Dragon's food, baths, rooms, and cleaning. She cleans the tavern obsessively and prepares hot baths, towels, soaps, and oils. She offers to clean guests' clothes and serves food, including roasted boar. Ameiko communicates with Mayor Deberin about events at Sandpoint Glassworks and handles town matters. She is focused on managing the Rusty Dragon to distract herself from recent events and plans to meet families and handle pensions and papers the next day. She has asked Esquik to help review and prepare pensions, funeral arrangements, and business papers in her office. Ameiko stated the Rusty Dragon does not have enough money to finance restoring Sandpoint Glassworks but will ensure the families of Sandpoint Glassworks workers are taken care of. She inherited her family's house on the outskirts of Sandpoint and prefers to sell it to someone she knows rather than to strangers.

Ameiko is informed about local events, including Nualia Tobyn's trial and its implications. She suggested Eliza speak with Father Zantus regarding Nualia Tobyn's situation and reported on the Scarnetti Family selling their wine collection due to a dispute with the Darrows. She mentioned potential logistics issues related to the Scarnettis' other businesses and is aware of Jubrayl Vhiski's accusations against Savah Bevaniky and the potential arrival of Hellknights in Sandpoint. Ameiko holds knowledge of the group’s journals and their subjects, having asked about the journal and the brother it concerned. She read the latest journal and noted that both the brother and Lamashtu had once been different people. She offered the group drinks on the house and reported that Shabba had visited the previous day looking for them and wanting to pick up some gear, although she did not understand what information Shabba might have been seeking.

Her value is medium due to her connections and role in the community, as she provides lodging, food, local recognition, and immediate assistance to The Party. Ameiko is one of those people around whom things tend to happen, not because she seeks it out exactly, but because she is the kind of person that the interesting and the dangerous seem to find their way to eventually, meeting whatever arrives with a composure that suggests she has made her peace with that fact. The threat/value rating is medium because of her knowledge of local conflicts and potential involvement of the Hellknights.
