Character overview
- Ruby has short, curly blonde hair, green eyes, fair, rosy-cheeked complexion, and a mischievous smile; she has also been described as red-haired. She wears dark, battered, mismatched plate armor, a cloth neck wrap, and a dark cloak or cape, and carries a shield and sword. She calls her sword Metal Stick. She is known to local children as “Ruby Filagoras” or “the Shield of Sandpoint.”
- She grew up on a farm outside Sandpoint and works a produce stall there. Jasper and Almor agreed to watch the stall so she could join the festivities. She has been described as affectionate and friendly, calls herself strong, and participates in athletic contests. She is Alden Foxglove’s former girlfriend.
- Ruby is proficient with a longsword and shield, can grapple and restrain foes, and is an expert in medicine. She purchased full plate armor and an asp-coil sword with a magical enhancement from Madame Basti, transferring the enchantment to the sword. She later improved her sword and armor, reinforced her shield, affixed a tiger menuki talisman to her weapon, and received a colorful, fur-lined silk sash from Bernas Fine Clothing.
- In Sandpoint, Ruby has supported the community and party in many ways: she participated in Lucien’s Theater performance, helped with reflected-light effects, and encouraged Saba to pursue Esquik; offered aid rather than focusing on payment, later gave Lucien a silver coin, and offered her Far North Cape to the town seamstress for remaking into matching sashes. She has checked on companions, comforted a widow and told her what The Party had discovered, helped a goblin with his lute, helped Esquik bury dead rats, and carried Eliza when needed. At the Rusty Dragon, she dined and lodged as Ameiko’s guest, intervened when Lonjiku grabbed Ameiko, and offered to help clean glasses before withdrawing the offer after the tavern-keeper suggested basement work.
- Ruby has accepted deputized authority and taken part in community safety efforts. She joined Aldern’s boar hunt, struck the trapped boar first, pushed Aldern aside, and refused his help mounting. She has been available in Sandpoint for relief and repairs, planned to check on people needing help, checked on Eliza, and proposed visiting a bereaved mother. She prioritized Ameiko’s safety during a crisis and moved with The Party toward Sandpoint Glassworks.
- In the Glassworks Showroom, Ruby led the way, fought attackers, stabbed a Fucking Big Goblin, and took a blow for Cerith. She found Tsuto among the attackers, searched his corpse, and read aloud from his Journal, revealing raid plans. She has also fought creatures and undead at The Catacombs, Father Tobyn’s tomb, and Thistletop, including cutting a mutated goblin-like creature in half and decapitating one threatening Lucien. She has raised her shield, used shield blocks and hampering stances, restrained enemy movement, taken blows and bites meant for companions, held chokepoints, forced open doors and hidden panels, and caught a falling rusty scythe trap with her shield. She drew enemy attention, struck down the goblin firecaster, offered the goblin cook surrender after announcing the chief’s death, and confirmed fleeing goblins were allowed to run. She was noted as encumbered after looting.
- Ruby has confronted Bruthazmus, helped track an invisible spellcaster and destroyed one of her protective images, and helped Eliza force open the barred Temple side door. She crossed a trapped Short Hall by leaping over a pressure plate, opened the eastern door, and engaged Nualia’s Yeth Hound. She resisted Nualia’s demand to prostrate herself, defended the doorway, intercepted a bite meant for Eliza, and was struck by fear magic. She argued that Nualia should face justice and left her bound while the lower level was searched. In a star-marked chamber, a greater barghest’s spell confused her and she attacked allies until restored. Ruby recovered from goblin pox while staying low with The Party, and was once exposed to goblin pox without becoming sick. She was wounded in an attack by a mutated goblin-like creature, agreed to seek medical treatment, and was healed by the Cleric Of Desna. She advised Cerith not to try to get herself killed again.
- Ruby dined with The Party at a Varisian restaurant and engaged a goblin troop in battle, supporting River. She suggested speaking with the guards at Magnimar’s closed gates, offered to repay River Hargreeve for her help, and invited her to Magnimar. Ruby remained with River while Lucien, Eliza, Esquik, and Rasvantin Torvashti traveled toward Sandpoint, then returned to town with River as snowfall intensified. A guard ordered the group to the sawmill, where Sheriff Hemlock reported a murder, said Rasvantin and Esquik had been seen following the victims, and demanded an explanation after revealing that a note addressed to Ruby had been found. At Habe's Sanatorium, the surviving witness Grayst Sevilla recognized Ruby and said His Lordship had spoken about her, then collapsed and shrieked until Dr. Habe calmed him; Eliza identified his symptoms, as Ruby described them, as late-stage ghoul fever. At Hambley Farm, a note addressed to Ruby was found nailed to a corpse’s face. River said its writer wanted Ruby to become a ghoul or ghast and called the fever the first of his gifts. After night fell, Ruby and Esquik ran through the door; they had been hunting ghouls outside and warned that dozens were approaching.
- While Ruby was absent, a ghast at the farm targeted Eliza instead of her. The corpse there bore the second note addressed to Ruby; the first had been found at the Lumber Mill. Ruby moved a small bookshelf against a southern window, raised her shield, and taunted a ghoul there. She attacked with Metal Whip, blocked a leaping ghoul’s bite with her shield, and later attacked with Metal Stick. She reinforced a window, advanced shield-first to kill an intruder, and returned to block the doorway. As more ghouls entered, she struck and taunted them, intercepted blows aimed at River and Eliza, and was hurt. When a ghoul seized Esquik, she attacked it twice, killing it with the second blow. During a later attack by scarecrow-like ghouls, she struck one within reach, shielded herself, intercepted blows aimed at Lucien and Eliza, and was injured. She struck the final surrounded ghoul with her sword, killing it.
