Biography
NPC overview
Hugh Mann is exactly what his name promises: an ordinary human man, so plainly average that the eye slides right off him. He's of unremarkable height and build—neither broad nor slight, neither tall nor short—the kind of frame that leaves no impression at all once he's out of sight. That, of course, is the whole point of him. He has a lean, mild face with even features: a straight nose, a faint shadow of stubble along the jaw, and calm hazel eyes that give away nothing. His brown hair is medium-length and tousled, falling loosely across his forehead and around his ears without any particular style to it. His expression is quiet and neutral, a little watchful—not unfriendly, not threatening, just the sort of steady, forgettable look that lets him fade into any crowd.
He's dressed for the road and for going unnoticed. A hooded cloak in muted moss-green hangs from his shoulders, worn and travel-dusted, half-covering a brown leather jerkin and a simpler tunic beneath. A broad leather belt with iron buckles cinches his waist, and tucked at his side are the tools of his real trade: a bone-handled dagger sheathed on one hip and the basket-hilt of a slender blade riding on the other, close to hand but never flaunted. Everything about Hugh is deliberately low-key—earthy colors, practical gear, nothing bright or memorable. He looks like a traveler, a hired hand, a face in the market you'd struggle to describe an hour later. Which is precisely how Hugh wants it.
Hugh is a recent member of the Hellbreakers who uses disguises, including Hulara and a hobgoblin guise, and regularly returns to a plain human appearance. He identifies himself as Hugh Gresh. He favors slipping away unnoticed and keeping out of sight. During the storytelling contest, Hugh left through the back door unnoticed, later returned as Hulara, and introduced themself to Lexx. He remained among the patrons to gather information, learning that Goblins south of town were restless and that people awaited responses from Elidir and Cheliax. The next morning, he examined a sealed Bounty Decree, changed into Hulara, obtained a copy, and learned it offered bounties for vaguely defined dissenters and revolutionaries. At the southern gate, Hugh passed Ethran the rumor about goblin trouble. On the road, Hugh expressed his disdain for Cheliax and its devil-worshipping ways. In Draymoor, he convinced suspicious Locals that the travelers were not rebels. During the fight at the ferry, a zombie bat seized Hugh but failed to finish him; he slashed it, then later killed the remaining bat while Bromli held it in the water.
In Hulara’s disguise, Hugh gathered information in Saringallow about resentment toward the state war steward and recent undead attacks. At the warehouse, he retied a tripwire so The Party could pass safely, then joined the fight against The Thieves. Samantha treated his injuries afterward. Hugh later proposed using infiltration to seize a supply ship without bloodshed. During the ambush, he boarded Target Ship, attacked the captain, resisted his threats, and was grabbed during the struggle. Hugh knocked the captain unconscious, then tumbled past the animated armor and destroyed it with a rapier strike. The armor’s destruction triggered a magical explosion from the lower deck, setting the ship on fire.
Hugh could change his appearance and used that ability to pass as a human militia recruit. He carried weapons and fought with both steel and bow. Aboard the burning ship, Hugh climbed into the rigging to clear away burning sailcloth, then helped frightened crewmen reach the water. He cut a mast line and swung clear of the wreck, reaching shore before the ship sank. He shot at a crocodile from range. Hugh traveled with The Party to Saringallow and then north to the Water Spout Inn. During the tavern fight, he flanked and skewered one loyalist, then switched to his bow and shot a fleeing militiaman through the eye. He later disguised himself as a local recruit and presented Bromli and Samantha as captured prisoners. Hugh led the deception before Captain Bane, then drew steel and attacked around the gangway. He moved beside Khar’gan to pressure Bane, but she struck him down. Hugh failed to recover and died.
