Character overview

Samantha, also known as Sam, is a composed Hellbreaker who tends the wounded and wields divine power.
Samantha is human, with horns and other tiefling features, a tail, and a halo above her head. Her rich, warm brown skin, large dark ram’s horns, long pointed ears, and softly glowing rose-red eyes frame a thoughtful expression. Her voluminous silver-white hair shades into lilac and dusky violet at the tips. She wears a white shirt beneath a rust-and-burgundy jacket or bodice, with a laced white corset-top, a gemstone clasp, and leather bracers and armor.

Samantha travels with the Hellbreakers League and has identified herself as Sam. At Caden’s Keg, she accepted a small drink, helped Lexx Rennde to her feet, stripped paint from Khar’gan, and added factual details to Lexx’s account of the Battle of Breachill. She treated wounded soldiers, then kept watch beside a wagon driver. At Draymoor, she questioned Hugh about his changing personas and commented on her horns. At the ferry, she spotted approaching giant bats, used divine power against them, and was bitten. She withdrew and spread a protective aura around her allies, assured the boatman that no one appeared badly hurt, and helped Lexx across the Conerica River.

In Saringallow, she gave the safe-house password, “We are friends of Rose.” At the warehouse, she spotted a tripwire and pulled Bromli Alefist back before crates fell; she pointed out the trap while Hugh disarmed it. She entered first, avoided a crossbow bolt, and was knocked unconscious by one of the thieves. She stabilized herself and later treated Bromli and Hugh. That afternoon she volunteered healing at the Temple of Erastil. During the river ambush, she hid near shore, boarded the supply ship, attacked the captain with her knife, and revived Bromli after animated armor knocked him unconscious, continuing to heal him during the fight.

After being badly wounded during a rescue, she asked Rhograk for time to treat herself and Khar’gan. At the Saringallow hideout, she introduced herself as Sam and told Kracka that Bromli had died. She later earned donations by tending wounds at the temple of Aras. On the journey to Vordia, she treated travelers’ minor injuries and spoke in favor of the Hellbreakers and Isgeran Independence. In Vordia, she tended wounds, watched for patterns, and learned that teenagers who entered the Bright Embers Orphanate had seen strange lights and heard strange noises. At the orphanage, she noticed movement behind an upstairs curtain. A food-laden apparition struck her; she healed herself and raised magical protection. She twice tried to calm the children’s The Ancestors without success. A lullaby upstairs left her slowed and nearly asleep. She later healed Kracka, used magic against the Attic Whisperer, and shot it before Mielikki destroyed it.

In Umok, Samantha examined a badly burned goblin and recognized that its injuries came from sustained direct contact with fire, rather than an ordinary forest fire, a spell, a flame-breathing creature, or being held in flames. She healed the party that night. She bears a rose of Milani and obtained healer’s gloves in Umok with the group’s agreement. At the Lucent Mission, she fought alongside the group, took a journal from the archives and called it her book, and pointed out during Sister Endreah’s questioning that Kracka’s skin was gray. She said she was there to keep her companions healthy and stop the armored man from summoning devils. In Chitterwood, she blasted a powerful devil with holy magic and sensed that it was especially hurt by it. After the fight, she helped treat the group’s wounds and spotted six pairs of red eyes in the bushes. Zagnub recognized her rose of Milani. She traveled with the group to Thorngrip, pulling Lexx along while Lexx painted Kracka’s shield. At the Isgeri Slayers’ The Camp, she advanced, continued her magic, healed Kracka, and fought alongside the group.

In the fight with the Isgeri Slayers, Samantha cast Bless and maintained it, and made one Slayer feel chilly. After another Slayer shot her, she had an arrow in her lung. She used Battle Medicine on herself, refused Kracka’s offer to close the wound with alchemist’s fire, and later healed the group. She asked Kracka not to leave her while he searched the tents and objected when he suggested she share one with Lexx Rennde. She proposed blaming the Isgeri Slayers’ deaths on an animal attack and warned that burning bodies or tents might lead Goblins to be suspected of summoning devils. She asked Braknap to mark the sites on the map and mentioned rock candy when he ate Kracka’s chalk. When Lexx referred to her drawing of the Viro Ahala, Samantha feigned surprise at her skill and walked into the darkness.

At Little Tree, Samantha warded Lexx and helped her escape the bear’s grasp. As the tree altered their sizes, she held tiny Lexx in her cupped hands and brought her closer to inspect it. She argued for restoring their normal sizes, citing the danger to Lexx; when the effect ended, Lexx grew larger than Samantha and fell onto her. At The Hungry Hole, Samantha could not identify its breathing, and the party withdrew. At Moss Pond, she warned Kracka that the site had been altered, shot at a sloth, and blinded one with an attack she called a “Kamehameha.” She treated the party’s wounds and, after returning to Thorn Grip, prepared Dispel Magic and used it from a distance to stop the pit from breathing.
