Character overview
Khar’gan, a Hellbreaker who has said he came to Cheliax seeking worthy conflict and battle honors for his clan, has also described himself as a foreigner aiding those who seek to destroy the Hellknights.
Khar’gan is a towering, powerfully built lizardfolk warrior with the long, tooth-lined snout of a crocodile. His hide is mottled green, darker across the back and shoulders and paler olive down his throat, chest, and belly. Sharp spines and crest-frills run from his crown down the back of his neck; his heavy-lidded eyes are amber-gold, and jagged teeth show even when his jaw is closed. A long, muscular tail trails behind him. He wears practical, well-worn armor of layered brown leather and studded plates, with a spaulder, a banded vambrace, straps and buckles, a broad belt hung with pouches and gear, and dark trousers. Seven feet two inches tall, he has carried a quiver and bow, a battleaxe, and a shortsword.
He has helped medics stabilize badly wounded people. In Breachill, he held Lexx Rennde against a wall while she painted, then chased her after bright pink paint splashed over him. Samantha removed most of it, and he spent part of the night scrubbing the lingering irritation from his scales. He joined the storytelling contest and spoke about aiding the wounded. In the morning, he noticed the town’s unease, saw Ethran on a wagon, and agreed to gather the others. On the overland journey, he said he had come to Cheliax seeking worthy conflict and battle honors for his clan. At the ferry, a zombie giant bat bit him badly; Lexx Rennde healed him, and Khar’gan cut one bat apart before helping finish the last. He asked whether everyone else was all right before the group crossed the Conerica River.
Khar’gan’s bow received magic from Ethran’s gifted greatsword. After the fight aboard the supply ship, he reached shore as the destruction of the animated armor triggered a linked magical explosion that set Target Ship ablaze. He fought the fire, treated the worst-injured sailors, helped salvage cargo, and fought the crocodile. Later, he used the Masquerade Scarf, killed Captain Bane, and helped defeat her Marines.
In Fernsby, Khar’gan gathered information about the vandalized Village Green, examined tracks, and helped follow the snake trail into a ravine. He descended, shot one snake, and then drew his sword. He resisted the many-headed goblin snake’s foul vapor before it bit and heavily injured him. He struck the creature again, fell back, and later joined Kuippana and Mielikki in killing the final goblin snake. He helped carry its large corpse back to Fernsby, where the villagers gave the group a runestone that was placed on his shortsword. In Stumpfield, he painted tribal markings onto the communal sculpture. At Umok, he stood behind Lexx as support while she argued that the burned goblin was a victim rather than the cause of the fires.
Khar’Gan traveled with the group and carried Kuippana at the outskirts of Umok. He fought with a bow and later took the Crimson Thorn, a sword capable of striking from a distance. He helped dig a firebreak, drenched his bedroll in a stream, and beat at the spreading flames until the forest fire was extinguished. In the forest, he empowered his weapon and attacked a hellhound, then was burned when the creatures breathed fire over the group. He later shot and killed the surviving hellhound with his bow. At Sister of the Golden Erinys’ mountain mission, he struck one sister without killing her, attempted to grapple another, and knocked her unconscious. In the kitchen, he studied a lemure, attacked the Better-Trained Sister, obstructed her path, and grappled her before Mielikki knocked her unconscious. He twice failed to tumble past a sister in the training room, then entered and knocked another unconscious with a powerful strike. He struck the remaining sister repeatedly, was healed by Lexx, and helped render her unconscious. He took the Crimson Thorn from the weapon racks, struck the avian devil with it, and later frightened Sister Endreah after striking her. He pursued her when she fled and kept her in sight.
Khar’Gan returned with the group to Saringallow while dealing with broken ribs. During the Hellbreakers League’s week of rest, he taught needy people to survive by making simple traps and fish traps and identifying safe and deadly berries. In Vordia, he observed individuals deemed worth watching. At the Bright Embers Orphanate, he entered the mess hall during the food haunt and moved aside when he realized the dinner bell had no physical source. In the playroom, he helped hold the haunted toy box shut despite nearly losing his grip. In the attic, the lullaby-haunt blinded him with darkness; he hunted the Attic Whisperer by instinct, drew his shortsword, and cut it twice before Mielikki destroyed it.
At the Lucent Mission, Khar’gan took the handwraps of mighty blows and left his shortsword among the group’s shared possessions. In Umok, the sword was sold and its rune moved onto Samantha’s corset knife. Khar’gan led the search through Chitterwood. At the stump clearing, he shot at a differently colored devil and missed; later, he cast gravity weapon and fired twice at it, with the second shot landing better. At Thorngrip, he told the elder he aided people seeking to destroy the Hellknights. At the Isgeri Slayers’ The Camp, he shot one in the shoulder, repositioned, and later moved to get a clear shot at the remaining Slayer, hitting him with an arrow.
Khar’gan traveled with the party, fought with a bow and his fists, and designated an opponent as his Hunt Prey. He fired twice at the Slayer who had attacked Kracka; the second shot missed, and he complained that the darkness made it hard to shoot. He later punched an opponent twice, landing the first blow. When a Slayer switched his Hunt Prey to Khar’gan, missed him with both strikes, and moved away, Khar’gan chased him and punched him in the back of the head, driving his nose through his skull. He asked whether he could take arrows from the defeated enemies because he was running low.
As the group planned to disguise the Isgeri Slayers’ deaths, Khar’gan suggested burning tents. He agreed to leave bite marks on the bodies and worked to make The Camp look as though a dinosaur had rampaged through it. At Thorn Grip, he favored Kracka as the carrier of Braknap’s Crystal Pendant talisman. He picked up Lexx Rennde and placed her beside him when Braknap was asked to mark the sites on the map. Later, he swallowed Braknap’s live gecko whole.
At Little Tree, Khar’gan became huge and recognized it as a magical source whose effects had been corrupted. He joined Kuippana in ending the tree’s effects, returning himself and the others to their normal sizes. He agreed that Lexx Rennde would carry the Spacious Pouch and that he would add collected loot to their shared supplies. At The Hungry Hole, its suction pulled him five feet closer; as the group withdrew, he carried Samantha and Lexx Rennde away from the pit.
